The Power of a Habit

How do you envision yourself in the next five years? What are you doing to get yourself there? Are your daily habits inclined towards supporting your goal? Are you happy in your now? If not, what are you doing to change your circumstances?

Most of us complain about our lives, our circumstances, our employers, our children, our work, the list goes on. I’ve been a top leader in that – always complaining about the different things “if only my boss was different, if only I could change jobs, if only I had time to do this, if only.. I did this for a number of years and guess what? Nothing changed 😊.

I was stuck because of my daily habits. Despite my complains, I was doing nothing towards changing my circumstances, I was hoping for a prince in a blue horse to come rescue me. I was not hungry enough to realize that nothing changes, when nothing changes.

One day in my desperation for change, I came across a recording that made me realize I had been going about this all wrong and I needed to change ME first. I needed to recondition my mind and my habits if I wanted to progress in life. I needed to change my habits, and change my thoughts; these would in turn change my outcome. I started in investing in me and working on me – through small daily incremental habits. I can confidently say now that I know where I am going and I know where I shall be in the next few years. I am more confident and focused, more determined, I have better, and healthier habits and I am still working on it, consistently. You don’t stop when you’re tired, you only stop when you’ve finished.

The power of a habit controls your destiny

Look at top athletes, they don’t sit and wait until a marathon is coming up to start practicing – they would fail miserably. The reason they are successful is because they keep practicing, even when there’s nothing at stake. We need to keep working on ourselves, through adapting to habits we’d like to see within ourselves.

You are what you consistently do

Want to be healthier? Start working out – start with the little you can, start eating right, every day, make it a habit and don’t stop. Want to be wealthier? Start doing something towards it every day, put together ideas, draft up a plan and start doing something about it, read books, learn from others. Want to have more time to play with your children? Start today, give them 15 to 10 minutes of your day or if not possible, find a few days of the week you can dedicate an hour to play with them. Your spouse is unhappy with you? Give them undivided attention everyday / week, assign time of focus on them. You’ll see how things change when you make these adjustments – simple but possible. Want to meditate or pray more? Start with a few minutes a day and build up to it.
