A number of us do not like spending time alone and will do anything to fill up every single minute of our lives. This, is without the realization that in this solitude, is where the magic happens, where healing takes place. We are in a fast-paced, hyperconnected world, and finding moments of solitude may seem like a luxury. Carving out time for oneself, however, is essential for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Alone time allows us to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with our inner selves. In this article, we will explore the importance of having alone time and provide practical strategies for incorporating it into a busy schedule. By prioritizing moments of solitude, we can cultivate a sense of balance, clarity, and self-awareness amidst the demands of everyday life. We need to practice being our own company and enjoying it.

The Importance of Alone Time:
1. Self-Reflection and Inner Growth:
Alone time offers an opportunity for self-reflection, introspection, and self-discovery. It allows us to explore our thoughts, feelings, and desires, fostering personal growth and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
2. Restoring Mental Energy:
Constant engagement with others and the external world can be mentally draining. Alone time provides a chance to recharge and replenish mental energy, promoting clarity, focus, and improved decision-making.
3. Enhancing Creativity and Productivity:
Solitude allows the mind to wander, facilitating creative thinking and problem-solving. Stepping away from external distractions fosters deep focus, leading to enhanced productivity and innovation.
4. Developing Self-Reliance:
Spending time alone strengthens our ability to be self-reliant and independent. It encourages self-trust and confidence, enabling us to make decisions based on our own values and needs.
10 Ways to Get Some Alone Time within a Busy Schedule:
It’s all good to know the importance of alone time, however, many of us struggle to find these moments. Here are a few ways you can create time within your already busy schedule to be able to have these healing moments. You deserve it. Some might not work for you depending on your schedule, but you could try another way from the list or modify one that best suits you;
1. Morning Rituals:
Wake up a bit earlier than usual to create a morning routine that centers around solitude. Engage in activities like meditation, journaling, or simply enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in peaceful silence. Wake up 30 minutes early. Waking up just 30 minutes before your usual time allows you to start your day with some quiet solitude. Use the time to read, meditate, or enjoy a cup of coffee by yourself.
2. Lunch Breaks:
Instead of socializing during lunch breaks, use this time to enjoy solitude. Find a quiet spot to eat, take a walk in nature, or engage in a mindfulness practice to recharge and refocus for the rest of the day. I have a colleague that takes solo-walks, and has internal conversations with herself. She says it helps her handle the afternoon better
3. Technology Detox:
Designate specific periods during the day or week for a technology detox. Disconnect from social media, emails, and screens, allowing yourself uninterrupted time for introspection, reading, or engaging in hobbies. Reading a physical book for 20 or 30 minutes a day can make a big difference. The detox can last for a few minutes to a few hours in a day. Limit social media. Social media can be a major distraction and energy drain. Limit checking social media to specific times each day or delete apps from your phone. The time you gain can be spent alone recharging.
4. Solo Walks or Nature Strolls:
Find moments to take solitary walks or immerse yourself in nature. Whether it's a short walk in a nearby park or a longer hike, these moments of solitude amidst natural surroundings can be rejuvenating and calming. If you live in a concrete jungle however, this can be a bit challenging and might not be possible to do it as frequently as you’d like. However, periodic walks can still make a difference. Be it weekly or monthly in a park.
5. Commute Time:
Use your commute time to create a personal sanctuary. Listen to calming music, audiobooks, or podcasts that inspire reflection and personal growth. If possible, consider walking or biking to work for a more mindful and serene journey – this also highly depends on your environment. My commute time is very sacred to me and I dislike it being interrupted. I listen to audio books, podcasts and time to study the good book.
6. Personal Retreats:
Plan occasional mini-retreats or staycations where you intentionally set aside time for solitude. Find a quiet Airbnb, a local retreat center, or create a retreat-like atmosphere at home. Use this time for relaxation, self-care, and self-reflection. I’ve personally longed to do this but been unable to actualize it. However, if your situation is different, it’s a very productive way of self-reflection. Someone recommended that we should aim to take an hour a day, a day every month and a week every year for self-reflection. If you’re able to schedule that, do try. It’s a worthy investment in yourself.
7. Saying No and Setting Boundaries:
Learn to say no to non-essential commitments that infringe upon your personal time. Set boundaries and prioritize your need for solitude, communicating it assertively and unapologetically. There are meetings you might need to say no to and friends hang-outs that might require a no every now and then. The same way you prioritize your work, should be the same way that you prioritize your personal reflection time.
8. Engaging in Solo Hobbies:
Identify hobbies that you can enjoy alone, such as painting, writing, playing an instrument, or practicing yoga. These activities provide an avenue for self-expression and allow you to lose yourself in the present moment. Many times these personal hobbies can point you to the direction of your purpose if you’re struggling to find it.
9. Quiet Evenings:
Designate certain evenings as quiet evenings, where you disconnect from external noise and create a calm atmosphere at home. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as reading, taking a bath, or practicing gentle yoga. I find that switching on the television in the background even when you’re not watching can be quite disturbing to your subconscious. Only switch it on when you purposely want to watch something for a certain duration, otherwise switch it off. It also fosters an environment for conversations in this quietness.
10. Traveling Solo:
Consider embarking on a solo trip, even if it's just a short getaway. Traveling alone offers a unique opportunity for self-discovery, independence, and rejuvenation. It allows you to fully immerse yourself in new experiences and connect with your innermost desires.
11. Leave work on time. Make a habit of leaving work on time at least a couple days a week. Those extra hours in the evening are perfect for exercising, cooking a nice meal, engaging in a hobby, or other solo self-care activities. This down-time and disconnect from work makes you even more productive as you’re able to rejuvenate and engage the other aspects of your life. Work-life balance, remember?
12. Take a long shower. A long, hot shower can wash away the stresses of the day. Use the time to simply stand under the warm water and be alone with your thoughts. Baths also work great for this. For the sake of water conservation and being conscious of our environment, these should be limited , but they can be so rewarding.
13. Go out for a solo meal. Get dinner or coffee at your favorite restaurant by yourself. Bring a book or journal to make it an enjoyable experience. Solo meals are a great way to indulge in some quality alone time. As a mother, I would need to keep this a secret from my kids as they would never forgive me .
14. Unplug before bed. Avoid screens, bright lights, and stimulation for 1 hour before bed. Use this time to read, meditate, or do light stretches. A calming pre-sleep routine will help you rest better at night so you wake up refreshed.
15. Take occasional personal days. If possible, take a personal day from work every now and then. Use the time to do whatever nurtures and recharges you like getting a massage, visiting a museum, or simply staying home alone. Personal days are important for wellbeing and work-life balance. I have a friend that used to take a day from work, but she’d leave the house the usual time as if going to work, then spend the day by herself in another friend’s house – who lived alone. She valued those days.
Conclusion:
In a bustling world filled with constant noise and demands, finding alone time is not a luxury but a necessity for our well-being. By recognizing the importance of solitude and implementing these practical strategies, you can create space within your busy schedule to nurture your inner self, recharge your energy, and cultivate a sense of balance and self-awareness.
