Making the Most of the Holidays: Creating Meaningful Routines for a Joyful Season

December is here, and with it comes expectant anxiety and varied excitement. This, coupled with a tad of complacency and throwing away of caution to routines we’ve acquired over the year. The mood is celebratory, from company events, to weddings, dinners and other informal meet-ups. Who doesn’t love December?

One thing for sure is that come January, we are hit by a ‘tinge’ of guilt. Perhaps you over-ate or over-indulged, or you over-spent your cash and possibly did not achieve what you thought you would.

While the hustle and bustle of this festive period can be exhilarating, it's essential to create meaningful holiday routines that allow you to savor the moments and make the season truly count.

How can you design purposeful routines that will promote a sense of fulfillment during this special time of the year?

Start the holidays with Reflection

Before diving into the holiday rush, take a moment to reflect on the past year. If possible, start by taking a day to slow down, rest and reflect. Consider your achievements, challenges, and the relationships that have enriched your life. This reflection will help you set a positive tone for the holidays and guide you in creating a thoughtful routine.

Prioritize Self-Care:

Most women, at the end of the Christmas festivities, usually feel like they need a holiday from the holiday. This is due to all the hosting, traveling, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the family – both immediate and extended. Despite all the expectations placed on you, it's important to prioritize self-care. Stop over-burdening yourself with chores that can be done by others at a small fee.

Take time away for yourself every so often, whether it's through morning meditation, a brisk walk in nature, or a cozy evening with a good book. These moments of self-care will rejuvenate you and enhance your overall well-being, then perhaps enable you to get that much-needed balance of rest and connection.

Create Meaningful Traditions:

We all have traditions that we’ve grown up with. However, most of these traditions are being overtaken with time, with changes in generations, and with marriage. Traditions are important in that they have the power to create lasting memories and strengthen bonds. Consider incorporating meaningful traditions that bring joy to you and your loved ones. They don’t need to be the ones you enjoyed, neither do they need to be costly. They could be as simple as a special holiday meal prepared together as a family, an extended family meet-up with everyone bringing some food, or a cozy day with a family activity you all enjoy – it can be a sport, a movie marathon, a charitable activity, to list but a few. Traditions provide a sense of continuity and connection, making the holiday season more memorable.

Connect with Loved Ones:

It’s also a time to strengthen connections with family and friends. Schedule intentional time for meaningful conversations, whether it's through video calls or in-person gatherings. Building and nurturing these connections is at the heart of a truly fulfilling holiday experience.

Creating meaningful routines can involve planning activities with loved ones that go beyond the typical holiday gatherings. This could include volunteering together, engaging in a creative project, or embarking on a new tradition that holds personal significance. These activities can deepen bonds and create lasting memories.

Scheduling Time for Physical Activity or Exercise

Amidst the indulgences of holiday feasting, it's important to prioritize physical well-being. Creating a meaningful routine that includes time for physical activity or exercise can help individuals maintain their health and vitality during the holidays. Whether it's a brisk walk-in nature, a yoga session, or a visit to the gym, incorporating physical activity into the holiday routine can have a positive impact on overall well-being.

Adapting Routines to Accommodate Travel or Changes in Environment

For many, the holiday season involves travel or changes in their daily routines. Unfortunately, most of us drop all the good routines we’ve accumulated to blend in with the holiday flow. You might want to consider adapting the meaningful routines instead, whether it's by finding new ways or adjusting routines to fit a different environment, flexibility is key to making the holiday count.

The season will come and go, how about making it more meaningful this year?
